B joined Devon & Cornwall Electrical Training in September 2004 and was our first female to undertake and attain an Electrotechnical Advanced Apprenticeship consisting of an NVQ Level 3 in Electrotechnical Services (Electrical Installation - Building & Structures) and City & Guilds 2330-01 Level 2 and 2330-07 Level 3 Certificates in Electrotechnical Technology. Throughout her training programme, B’s motivation and commitment was exemplary. She was the only female in a ‘‘fast track’ tutor group and her example resulted in her becoming well respected by her peer group. B was intellectually very able, demonstrated by her ability to undertake challenging mathematical calculations and attain excellent marks in internal and external examinations. B went on to further demonstrate a high level of understanding by attaining the City & Guilds 2391 Level 3 Inspection, Testing and Certification of Electrical Installations upon completion. She was well organised and structured in her approach to her training programme. We are thrilled that B has gone on to attain higher qualifications within the industry and she sets an excellent example to future learners wishing to progress into higher education.
During my apprenticeship, I worked on a wide range of products. I began my apprenticeship working for Cassidy Electrical, mainly on domestic installations and small commercial projects. I then went on to work for Mitie Engineering on a variety of larger projects including Exeter University, The Derwent Hotel and Torre Abbey. In April 2008 I took a position as a Trainee Electrical Design Engineer at Scott Wilson Group Ltd. The sector I work in is Building Services, consisting of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Consultants. I am being sponsored by Scott Wilson to do an HND/BSc Building Services Engineering course (by day release) at South Bank University. This is a very flexible course as the HND is integrated into the BSc allowing a point after two and a half years to stop and still obtain a qualification. The BSc takes a total of four years. There is also an option to transfer on completion of year 2 to the BEng (Hons) course. The apprenticeship I undertook at Devon and Cornwall Electrical Training Centre has given me a strong foundation of skills combined with practical on site experience. This was considered to be a significant advantage by my current employers. It has enabled me to go on and take advantage of opportunities for further study. When I began my apprenticeship I did not really know exactly what to expect but was keen to have a go and I have found it to be a very worthwhile experience. After completing a degree in Building Services Engineering I aim to obtain professional registration as an Incorporated Engineer and in the long term, after further study and more experience I would like to become a Chartered Engineer.
