Case Study 11-Accountancy

Y applied to Acacia Training and Development Ltd in July 2006 when she was 18. We found her a placement with a local letting company, who found her to be a really enthusiastic young lady, keen to help with all aspects of the company, including accounts.  We enrolled her for her NVQ level 2 in accounting under the apprenticeship scheme and she flew through the qualification achieving in August 2007.  She then enrolled for the NVQ level 3 in Accounting, still under the apprenticeship banner in September 2007, which she completed in August 2008.  Y then enrolled for her NVQ level 4 in Accounting and decided to move to another company who promised her more hands on accountancy work, but this did not work out and after a few months her old employers were glad to welcome her back, to aid her to continue her accounting studies.  The company is extremely pleased with her and her work ethic. Considering Y's background, she has excelled in her achievements thus far and though always being an outwardly confident young lady she has now matured and shows a determination to succeed in her chosen profession. I have always found Y to be an extremely pragmatic and cheerful person who accepts what life throws at her and just "gets on with it".Y went into sixth from after school, but unfortunately her dad was involved in a life threatening accident. She was traumatized from the accident and therefore missed a lot of the work in sixth form. She then decided to leave and get a job at 118 118, but she always wanted to do accountancy and applied for a position that she seen in the newspaper with Acacia Training. She found it difficult at first, dropping from full time wage she was getting to £80 per week but with the family support she received she managed. She has now passed her NVQ 2 and NVQ 3 and is working towards a NVQ 4; Future plans are to go onto ACCA and CIMA. Her training manager has explained a lot of it to her but she will look into it when it comes to the time. At the moment Y is volunteering at an accountants for work experience, she feels that she has not only gained knowledge from volunteering she has also made lots of new friends in class. Y is more self-assured and determined to find the right direction but being at Acacia has given her a good goal for the future. She would recommend Acacia to anyone, because depending on the course £80 a week is hard to live on but the benefits from getting the experience is great. Y said that Acacia also help you with personal support; she knows that she can speak to Mike if she needs to. “They care about you as a person, and always try to help if they can, sometimes just to listen”. Since completing this Y has now secured a new job with excellent prospects.
